How-to find the best pre-loved bargains

Every year, more than three million pre-loved treasures are set free from cupboards, sheds and garages across Australia as part of Garage Sale Trail.

It's your once-a-year chance to uncover unique finds, meet locals and shop sustainably — all while having a brilliant day out.

Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or just starting your secondhand adventure, here’s how we make it easy (and fun) to find the good stuff when you hit the trail on 8-9 & 15 -16 November 2025.

1. Start with the map

The Garage Sale Trail map is your shortcut to the best bargains. You can:

  • Search by suburb, date or category
  • Save your favourites
  • Build your very own treasure trail

No aimless driving, no missed gems — just a smooth, planet-friendly shopping adventure

2. Shop with a purpose

Secondhand shopping works best when you know what you’re after. Take five minutes before you head out to make a list — perhaps' you're getting a early start on the Christmas shopping or looking for a new-to-you summer outfit.

A list will help you focus on what you truly love (and avoid overfilling the car boot!).

3. Bring a little cash

Many sellers now provide PayPal QR code payments, PayID or bank transfer, but plenty still prefer cash and gold coins. Keep a mix of both to make quick deals — and maybe even score a discount for paying cash.

4. Dress for the hunt

Comfort is key. Wear comfy shoes, a hat and sunscreen. If you’re trying on clothes, go for easy layers — changing rooms are rarer than hen’s teeth at garage sales!

Bonus: A cross-body bag keeps hands free for rummaging.

5. Make a day of it

Pack snacks, water and a KeepCup for coffee stops along the way. Chat to sellers, ask about the stories behind their items and enjoy the community buzz. Every conversation is part of the adventure.

6. Share your finds

When you shop secondhand, you’re not just grabbing a bargain, you’re keeping good stuff in use and out of landfill.

Share your finds on social media tagging @GarageSaleTrail and #GarageSaleTrail to show others how joyful reuse can be.
