Together with PayPal, we surveyed over 1,000 Australians aged 18-75 to get the latest trends when it comes to secondhand selling and shopping. Here’s the inside scoop…
Your unwanted stuff could be making you money
The research showed that most Australians (83%) have unused or unwanted items they are willing to sell. It also revealed that these items could net you a pretty penny!
According to the research, the average value of unused or unwanted items per Australian household is $1,468. Time for a garage sale anyone?
More & more people are buying secondhand
For those hosting a garage sale on the trail this year, there's a bigger market than ever for secondhand products, with nearly 9-in-10 (87%) Australians saying they have purchased something secondhand. Top categories to buy secondhand included books / dvds / cds / vinyl (84%) and furniture (83%).
Gen Z were the most likely to thrift, with 94% having bought something secondhand, closely followed by Millenials (92%).
And what do we think is driving the increase in secondhand buying we hear you ask? Well, the most popular reason was to save money - almost two-thirds (64%) cited this.

About the Research – 2024 PayPal Garage Sale Trail Research Report
The research was produced by PayPal Australia, based on an online study conducted by Fifth Quadrant with n=1022 sample size. The consumer research consisted of a sample audience of Australians aged 18-75, and was weighted by age, gender and location to ensure data was nationally representative. Quotas and samples were set on turnover and location. The research was fielded in September 2024.
